Field Repair Shorts

One-of-one reconstructed Carhartt shorts modified entirely by hand.

The original garment was selected for its faded indigo patina and exceptional condition, a quality of vintage Carhartt workwear that has become increasingly difficult to find. The fabric carries years of natural wear, producing tonal variations and surface character that cannot be replicated through artificial distressing.

Over several weeks, the shorts underwent repeated revisions. Multiple construction directions, stitch treatments, and repair approaches were tested before arriving at a quieter and more restrained final design.

The widened leg openings are constructed using additional side panels, a detail that has appeared in previous works but is explored here with greater attention to proportion, finishing, and reinforcement. Each panel is secured by hand-sewn stress point markers and finished with off-white X reinforcements.

The leg openings are finished with a quadruple running stitch, producing subtle texture and density along the hem while providing additional stability to the widened silhouette.

All modifications were completed entirely by hand. Repairs, reinforcement stitches, darning, and finishing details were constructed without the use of industrial equipment, emphasizing a slower approach to garment making and visible construction.

Two hand-darned repairs appear on the garment: one positioned at the front fly and another beneath the rear pocket. Both are woven using aqua blue thread that complements the faded indigo fabric while introducing additional depth and color variation.

The resulting garment balances workwear, repair, and reconstruction through a restrained approach to intervention.
